1. Hallo, Sarah (and everyone else who is reading this). I am writing this also on a Sunday, but a rather special one: December 31, 2006 – the last day of the year. Anne-Marie is busy preparing our home (and our table, and our kitchen, and finally herself) for our St Sylvester dinner [for 6: we have invited some friends, Monique Imschoot, Freddy De Corte – the president of the “Vlaamse Club in Luxembourg”, and Dirk & Marita Van Reeth]. So we should have a jolly good evening and go gently & merrily into the unknown 2007. Fireworks to be admired in the good old (tiny, by US standards) City of Luxembourg and on TV. Some nostalgia, and some sadness too because you are not with us at this time of the year – but, hey, 2007 is the year you are supposed to return to Europe, somewhere right in our immediate neighbourhood (“the near abroad”, as the Russians say), so we have something to look forward to. (And also, of course, our trip to your Californian place which we now have to schedule for next Spring – you keep some dates open?).
   I am quite curious about your text (“discourse”) on Antigone (I remember you giving that little booklet with all those references) – your Mom and I read Anouilh’s theater piece (in French) at university, of course (and we saw it performed on scene some years ago here in Luxembourg); and I read recently the original Sophocles piece (in French translation, my Greek being non-existing). It’s a recurring theme in European literature and also in political philosophy (the individual against the State; individual conscience vs the Law; just and unjust laws; civil disobedience…). So what do you feminist ladies make of it?
   On a lighter note: I retrieved your big “Christmas” pack from our Post Office yesterday – and Anne-Marie and I were highly amused, charmed and honoured by the very personal Christmas gifts which it contained. Thanks and kudos for so accurately guessing our needs and respective tastes! We will take care of sending on Maud’s gift to Glasgow. Maud, by the way, spent some good, quiet days (“quality time”…)here with us in Luxembourg and left this week for Italy (of course, where else?), to go to Naples (via Charleroi and Rome) where she will celebrate New Year with Italian friends. And I just finished writing a nice Season Greetings card for Rosi Braidotti and Anneke in Utrecht, who sent us an ever nicer and enthusiastic card a week ago.
   We wish you and your friends (especially Giulia) all the very best for the New Year, Sarah: good health (take care of yourself and your body!), real love and great achievements (however defined – we leave that definition to you). Love –
